Imelda Marcos style (and shoes!)

If you remember I had a post about celebrity's walk-in wardrobe in which among the celebrities I feature Mariah Carey's huuuge walk-in shoes closet!! I thought that was overwhelming...

But I forgot about Imelda Marcos! If you think Mariah's shoes closet is massive then you should think twice. Imelda Marcos's shoes collection is far more than massive. Imelda's shoes collection could fit a small house! In fact, her museum is a small building in which she housed her shoes collection in every room. Imelda opened a museum to house her MASSIVE shoes collection, located in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Her collection is said to have reached to 3000 pairs (GASP!) but only around (at least) eight hundred pairs of the collection are being housed in the museum. Among the most expensive in her collections are Ferragamo, Chanel, Christian Dior, Givenchy, etc.

Who doesn't know Imelda Marcos? Her lavish lifestyle when she was the wife of the Phillipines president Ferdinand Marcos made her famous. Their government were said to be the most corrupted until the poeple power bring them down and their family fled the country. When she left the country it was said that she left around 800 dresses, some mink coats and 3000 pairs of shoes in her palace!

I googled her and found out that she actually a very pretty lady especially in her youth. She is sophisticated and ladylike, pretty and well-poised, such a perfect first lady if not for her bad rep as a big spender. She also was very fashionable, probably the most stylish among the few of well-dressed first lady such as the famous Jackie O, Michelle Obama, Akie Abe (i'll post about Japan's first lady Akie Abe in another time), etc..

Imelda is famous for her signature "pointy shoulder" dress. Most of her dresses has that peculiar signature style. It does fit her profile though.. ^o^

What I Wear Today

This week's Events and Breast Cancer Awearness Day4 & Day5

Hello!
Sorry for the late posts, my brother in law was getting married last weekend so I was busy enough and didn't have time to open my laptop. Now that I'm back, I just found a couple of emails for some event invitations in my inbox. There's one from Kenneth Cole Reaction who is launching their new men's sportswear line at Macy's in Herald Square, New York. To celebrate the launch, Kenneth Cole himself will be hosting the cocktail event, featuring a live performance by Brooklyn-based band Atomic Tom. The event will be held on Wednesday, October 20th at 6pm so if you're a New York based then you could go to the Macy's store and get in on the action :)

Another email is from Fashion Minga which will host a celebrity-packed red carpet and is LA Fashion Week's most prestigious and highly anticipated event. They sent me a link to fill in the press form if I want to cover the event as blogger journalist. Too bad I didn't live in NY or LA nor anywhere near the US of A ^o^ But if I do, I would really love to go and cover the event at my blog.

I hope Jakarta would also have a lively fashion scenes which include bloggers as part of acknowledged journalists like what they did in America. I do notice that a few of the Indonesian fashion industry people are starting to invite fashion bloggers in their campaign but there are only a few of them. Looks like the rest of the industry still hasn't realize the power of social media and bloggers as powerful campaigners ^o^ Well, this is just my two cents..

So anyway, continuing my Breast Cancer A-wear-ness challenge, this is day 4 & day 5 of the challenge. I've said before in my previous post that I only plan to wear pink for maybe a week because I don't think I have that many pink items in my wardrobe, but as I was browsing my wardrobe looking for something pink I found that I actually have a few more pink items than I thought I had ;p so I think I could prolong my challenge for a few more days ^__^

DAY 4

The pink item I wore on day 4 is the pink trapeze tunic that my SIL gave me as a birthday present. I experiment by wearing it asymmetrically but don't really like the result ;p I really want to wear it unconventionally but didn't really have any idea on how to do it (lol) so if you got any suggestions on how to wear this trapeze tunic a different way please tell me in the comment :)
The gold stacked bracelet is new! I collected Indian style stacked bracelets and so far I only have like 4 of them. And now I have the gold ones, yeay! I plan to collect them in many colors ^o^

The shorts is from Zara and the gladi sandals is from Top Shop. The belt is an old collection of mine, I forgot where I got it, it's really that old ;p

DAY 5

The pink item I wore on day 5 is the pink hair fastener cum bracelet which is a gift from my MIL and the pink/black striped top which I got from a bazaar in my old office. The bag is kinda new, I bought it around last month and this is probably my second wear :) Must wear it often cos I like the shape and I don't know why I'm crazy about quilted bags! I looked at all my bags (which is not too many) and almost 80% of them are quilted bags! ^o^

UPDATED! --> I just realized that I've worn this clothing combination back in February. My goal is to not wear the same outfit in a year's time and although I did wear this combo before but luckily I styled it differently this time so it's totally a new look :)

This is a proof that the same clothes with different accessories can result in different looks, I also styled it differently, you can see that I tucked the blouse inside the black tubedress in my February look, and for the recent look I wore the blouse OVER the tubedress and belted it.

Talking about Batik the other day is kinda excite me a bit because I love talking about my country's heritage. On October 2nd 2009 UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
According to Wikipedia, Batik is a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. The history of Batik in Indonesia was related to Majapahit Kingdom and therefore Batik is well known as a Javanese tradition/heritage. Batik has developed in the empire of Mataram, and the kingdom of Solo and Yogyakarta. Batik from those different areas has different motifs/patterns so they are unique as their own.

Also according to Wikipedia, In Indonesia batik popularity has its ups and downs in the fashion trend. Historically it was essential for ceremonial costumes and it was worn as part of a kebaya dress, which was commonly worn every day in the old times. However, batik clothing has revived somewhat in the 21st century, due to the effort of Indonesian fashion designers to innovate the kebaya by incorporating new colors, fabrics, and patterns. Batik is a fashion item for many young people in Indonesia, such as a shirt, dress, or scarf for casual wear. For a formal occasion, a kebaya is standard for women. It is also acceptable for men to wear batik in the office or as a replacement for jacket-and-tie at certain receptions.

Batik was also found in other countries such as India, China, Malaysia, etc but Indonesia probably has the most numbers of various patterns and motifs. Some of the world designers have been seen using Javanese Batik for their inspiration / collection, such as Dries Van Noten and Adidas.

Indonesia also has many fashion designers that loves to implement Batik in his/her designs but not too many designers who specializes in Batik and loves Batik as much as Edward Hutabarat. I've mentioned about Edward Hutabarat (or known as Edo) in a post last year where he did a modernized batik. I always love his modern batik designs, it's wearable, adorable and the colors and motifs he chose are always a pleasure in the eye. Here are some of Edo's new designs for 2010:

Batik has now become one of a favorite clothes to wear for Indonesian girls and women, there's also many batik clothing available for little kids to wear. Batik is no more exclusively for formal wear but you can see people in the street strutting batik in everyday wear. You can say that Batik is Indonesian's favorite clothing item, and we are proud to wear it! :D
